PhD student - Regularization strategies for advanced laser pulse shape reconstruction
Bewerbungsschluss:29.02.2016 Kennziffer: C-16-02-1
Vergütung: Payment is according to TVöD (treaty for public German service).
Befristung auf: The position is temporary limited to 3 years.
Stellenprofil: PhD student position in the interdisciplinary research project ?Regularization strategies for advanced laser pulse shape reconstruction? funded by the DFG (German Research Council).

The project addresses the problem of measuring the shape of femtosecond lasers pulses. As these pulses constitute the shortest controllable events in nature, one can simply not characterize them with the aid of an even shorter transient event. Several techniques (FROG, SPIDER) have been established to overcome this fundamental dilemma. Our project goes an important step beyond currently available measurement methods for the characterization of femtosecond laser pulses and addresses the situation of dynamically unstable pulse trains. The goal of the project is the development and demonstration of methods that allow for the retrieval of the average pulse shape simultaneously with reconstruction of the coherence function of the dynamical instability. The project requires an interdisciplinary approach, combining methods of applied mathematics and experimental physics. The mathematics side will be covered by the group of Prof. Bernd Hofmann at TU Chemnitz. In addition, a close collaboration with researchers at Georgiatech (Atlanta, USA) and the Technical University of Tampere (Finland) is planned.
Anforderungen: Applicants should have a master/diploma degree in physics. The ideal candidate will possess a background in ultrafast laser optics, nonlinear optics, and photonics and will have experimental experience in a laser laboratory. Computer programming skills and data analysis capabilities are a plus. Excellent communication skills are therefore required, including an excellent command of written and spoken English.
Bewerbung an: The position is temporary limited to 3 years. Payment is according to TVöD (treaty for public German service).

The MBI is an equal opportunity employer and specifically welcome applications by female scientists. Preference will be given to applicants with disabilities when qualifications are equivalent.

Applications with all relevant documents (cover letter, CV, copy of degree certificate, transcript of grades) should be sent to Dr. Günter Steinmeyer (steinmey@mbi-berlin.de) or Prof. Thomas Elsaesser (elsaesser@mbi-berlin.de).
